This is a very important recipe. Why? Because it’s officially the FIRST crockpot dessert recipe I’ve ever made!

This slow cooker caramel apple dump cake might just be the best thing I’ve ever eaten…ever. It’s so good and BONUS, it’s crazy easy, made in my all-time favorite kitchen tool (the crockpot), and it tastes like cozy, Fall, warm, spiced, caramel-y perfection.

What is a dump cake?

I know, I know. Dump cake doesn’t exactly sound like the yummiest thing ever, but I promise it is! Dump cake just means a cake you make by dumping all the ingredients in a pan and baking it.

This caramel apple dump cake is just that but instead of a cake pan, it’s a crockpot!

Ingredients

This combination of ingredients seriously tastes like Fall. It’s nice and crispy on the outside while remaining soft and gooey on the inside.

  • Apple Pie Filling – I just use one can but if you prefer more apple, use two!
  • Pecans – add a delicious crunchy texture.
  • Caramel Ice Cream Topping – use jarred topping or make this homemade salted caramel sauce!
  • Spice Cake Mix – don’t make the cake; just use the dry cake mix!
  • Unsalted Butter – adds warmth and extra flavor.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream – for serving!

How to make

All you have to do is dump a bunch of ingredients into your crockpot, forget about it for hours, and come back to a delicious dessert!

  1. Grease your crockpot then dump in apple pie filling and spread evenly.apple pie filling in crockpot
  2. Top with pecans and caramel sauce.caramel sauce and pecans in crockpot
  3. Pour in cake mix and spread it out evenly, gently pressing down.cake mix being pressed into crockpot
  4. Top with cubed butter, then cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.cubed butter in crockpot
  5. Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!slow cooker caramel apple dump cake being served

I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous about how the texture was going to turn out but oh. my. gosh. It’s perfect!

Can you use homemade apple pie filling?

I like to use store-bought, canned apple pie filling for convenience but if you’re feeling ambitious you can absolutely whip up some homemade apple pie filling instead!

Can you make dump cake in the oven?

You sure can!

To cook it faster in the oven, simply spread the filling in a baking dish, drizzle with caramel, dump the cake mix over the mixture, pour on melted butter, top with chopped pecans, and bake at 350ºF for roughly 45 minutes!

variations

The best part about a dump cake is that you can play around with flavors! You really can’t mess it up!

  • Use a different cake mix. White, yellow, pumpkin, or even carrot cake mix would all be delicious! Or give my crockpot pumpkin dump cake a try!
  • Try other flavors. Use any pie filling—cherry, peach, blueberry, raspberry, rhubarb, you name it!
  • Use homemade pie filling. Feel free to whip up a batch of your own pie filling instead of canned.
  • Add marshmallows. Pour a bag of mini marshmallows into the crockpot in the last 30 minutes of cooking for some ooey-gooey sweetness.

How to store

Dump cake can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days, in the refrigerator for 4-5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To reheat, just microwave or bake until heated through!

Thanksgiving dessert anyone? Nobody needs to know how easy it is. 😉
